Shopping wasn't much of a chore. Nova wanted to avoid the store where Aaron worked on the mainland, but there were options. It felt like coming back to the real world from a dream, smelling the exhaust and the asphalt after a few days in Mackinaw's clear, pure air. Nova wondered if this was what smokers felt like, knowing that what was going into their bodies was killing them, but too needy for the comfort of the familiar to give it up.

Nova flinched out of habit at the expense. The inheritance money wasn't going anywhere, but it still felt irresponsible to spend this much at once after her parents put so much effort into teaching her how to handle money. She needed these things, but old habits and all that. This purchase didn't give her the little quickening of the heart that she usually got from bouts of retail therapy. She handed over a card without ceremony, and suddenly she was the owner of some more things.

Nova lingered in town for longer than was necessary. The thought of making that trip out onto the Great Lake left her bouncing her knee and chewing her lip. Finally, as the sun was setting, she gave in and took the last ferry to the island, her new furniture and a pair of delivery workers in tow.

The carriage ride back home was dark and lonely. Owls hooted somewhere in the branches, and the air was heavy with the smell of wet leaves and the musk of the horses.

"So," one of the delivery guys said. "Mind settling a bet for us?"

"What?"

The guy, in his twenties and surrounded with the odor of stale cigarette smoke, jabbed his thumb at the other delivery guy. "My man says you married money. I say trust fund baby."

Nova frowned. "What?"

"Nobody moves out to Mackinaw looking for work. Not with a nice house up in the hills, anyway. And you're a young chick dropping a wad of cash all at once, not putting it on credit. So which is it, husband or mom and dad?"

"What the hell makes you think it's any of your business where my money comes from and what I do with it?"

The delivery guy's eyes bulged. "I mean, I was--"

"No," Nova said. "I don't care. I don't owe you an explanation, and my life isn't a source of entertainment for you."

The other delivery guy decided to pipe up at that point. "Look lady, it was just a bet--"

"You know what, just leave the shit in the living room when we get there and get out of my house as fast as possible." Nova glared straight ahead. "I guess invading a woman's privacy is pretty standard around here."

The delivery men shrank away. Nova thought she heard one of them mutter "bitch" under his breath, but she ignored it as best she could. Maybe she was a bitch, but she was tired, and she was done with men looking at her like that, talking to her like that. She
